Job Description

Our client is looking for an Underwriter Clerk.


Support the execution of the business plan by accepting the risks and processing them (including carrying out all the relevant compliance checks, gathering all the data) in order to create a short pack for the Underwriters’ review. Supporting the Underwriting process, focusing on developing underwriting skills and technical knowledge whilst working alongside Underwriters to manage existing accounts and future profitable growth successfully.

Role Responsibilities

  • Prepare and report figures and statistics for the business unit or team account
  • Ensure accurate entry of risks onto the underwriting system
  • Ensure accurate entry of policy aggregate information onto the relevant software and spreadsheets, as required
  • Copy/scan slips and other risk information, as requested
  • Ensure the syndicate records and files are maintained and up to date
  • Validate USMs and SCMs on a daily basis
  • Demonstrate the ability to liaise with brokers, clients, reinsurers and Lloyds as necessary
  • Support the preparation of the business plan and any other document/ information as required
  • Support the monitoring and control of the business, as directed by Underwriters
  • Assist underwriters in delivery of their accountabilities and support with efficient operation of the business
  • Prepare and report figures and statistics to the Underwriter on an ad hoc basis
  • Maintain all underwriting records accurately and efficiently
  • Liaise with and assist the claims department when required in the settlement of claims
  • Demonstrate awareness of, and adherence to:
    • data governance framework; escalating material issues in a timely manner
    • risks in your area; working within the parameters of the framework, including recording of losses or near misses
    • the document management policy, whether as document author, reviewer, or user

Skills & Experience


  • Work experience at a reinsurance brokerage (retail broker experience also considered)
  • Worked in a Financial lines team
  • Demonstrated understanding of business objectives and the market in which we operate      
  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Ability to plan and organise own role effectively
  • Understanding of accounting principles
  • Mathematical and statistical ability
  • Strong understanding of risk management and governance framework and how own role fits into it
  • Underwriting discipline                                            
  • A practical understanding and analysis of risk, pricing, contract wordings and claims         
  • Ability to promote own profile and company to brokers and clients
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills
  • Effective communication and rapport building skills
  • Effective influencing skills


  • Confident understanding of a Balance sheet, Income Statement
  • Basic understanding of financial ratios (liquidity, leverage, profit margin etc)
  • Ability to be assertive when appropriate
  • Ability to use appropriate systems to the technical level required
  • ACII qualified
  • Completion of ALMI test or equivalent
